It’s not uncommon to have a strong desire to achieve something, or do something, but to have an innate doubt festering within you that says you can’t.
If you think it’s just you who experiences this, know that isn’t true. If you think you’re weird or odd because you have an internal battle going on between desire and fear, know that you’re not.
It’s completely normal, and it’s human nature.
Let’s take writing for example. So many people who find out I write novels say something along the lines of “Wow, that’s so cool! I would love to write, but I’m no good at writing.”
Maybe this is you. Maybe you’ve looked at other writers and authors, desiring to achieve the same goal, but doubting your ability to get there. You may feel like you don’t have enough experience, or that you’re unqualified for one reason or another. And so, this inner turmoil continues to stir, until it’s turned into a storm that you can no longer ignore.
If you want to write a book, write a book. Maybe you would love to tackle one blog post first. Well, sit down and write it.
The truth is, there’s no such thing as not enough experience, or not qualified enough. But in the generation I grew up in, we were often taught that this is the case whether in school or applying for jobs. It’s always about how much you know and how many skills you have to your name.
In the creative world however, there’s no comparison. No “you’re not good enough, smart enough, or skilled enough”.
There’s only different levels, each needed and welcomed in their own right.
You ARE good enough. You ARE qualified. You DO have the experience. It’s only how you choose to see it. If you tell yourself you’re not good enough, then you aren’t.
But if you can shift your mindset to believe that you are good enough, then suddenly you let go of what’s stopping and you can just start writing.
I speak from experience.
I knew absolutely nothing about writing fiction when I got started. But I’d come to the point where the storm within was too big to keep inside any longer and I just began. And that’s all you need to do. Just begin.
If you’re a beginner, it doesn’t mean you can’t write a book. You may need some guidance, or you may decide you can figure it out on your own with a little self-belief. Either way, it is possible for you.
This applies to everything in life too, not just writing. Think of any desire you have where there’s also an underlying doubt stopping you. Shift your belief and just get started with little steps.
Let your desire be stronger than your doubt. Then, everything is possible.
Leave a comment and let me know, what stops you from writing your book, or what stops you from fulfilling any other desire you have? How will you overcome this by shifting your mindset and what steps can you take now?
